45 Things I Wish I Knew When I Started Leading Worship: Part 2 - The People Part

Worship leaders, can I be real with you for a moment?

When I first started, I honestly thought worship was mostly about music. I figured if we just played better songs, had tighter harmonies, got the mix right—then we’d really hit that “anointed” mark.

I was wrong.

Jesus didn’t die for songs—He died for people.

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. JOHN 3:16

Here’s what I’ve learned about the people part of ministry—and why it’s the real foundation of leadership that lasts:

1. People are more important than songs.

Never let a setlist overshadow the souls standing in front of you. Often we talk about leading songs, but the real conversation should be around how well you are leading people. Shepherd and care for people - and sometimes use songs to do it.

2. Make everyone around you feel like the superstars that they are.

Newflash - you’re not the main character. Honor the contribution of others and call out their value often. Help others see themselves the way Christ sees them.

3. Good people have bad days—extend grace. You’ll need it tomorrow.

Grace isn't optional. If you think you won’t need it you’re fooling yourself. Sow forgiveness, kindness, and mercy everywhere you go.

For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. MATTHEW 6:14-15

4. Who you are off stage impacts how people relate to you on stage.

Authenticity earns trust. People won’t follow someone they don’t respect behind the scenes. Be the type of leader that others want to follow - not because you are a great singer, but because they know you care.

5. Always honor and make room for those who have walked the path before you.

You’re standing on someone’s shoulders. Don’t forget that. Ask questions. Listen well. Take notes. Walk the path their faithfulness has paved.

6. Grab the hand of up-and-coming leaders and pull them up higher.

Don’t just lead songs—build legacy . Invest in the next generation and make room for their contribution.

Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you. PHILIPPIANS 4:9

7. Allow yourself to be critiqued by leadership that loves you.

Correction isn’t rejection. It’s the kindness of a leader who believes in your potential.

Rebuke a wise man, and he will love you. Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser; teach a just man, and he will increase in learning. PROVERBS 9:8-9

8. Speak the truth in love.

Truth alone can cut. Love alone can coddle. But together? They build people up.

CALL TO ACTION:

Worship leaders—it’s time to lead like Jesus.
Don’t just sharpen your skills. Sharpen your heart for people.

This week, pick ONE of these 8 truths and put it into action:

  • Text a team member just to encourage them.

  • Apologize for something you brushed off.

  • Invite a younger leader to coffee and just listen.
